I need to add more power to my layout.  I like the physical look of the Lionel CW-80 and the features, but am concerned about DCS compatibility due to some posts here stating potential issues.  Is the CW-80 suitable for this application or is the Z1000 from MTH better?

I am running a MTH TIU on the layout. I can use my current MTH brick with the TIU in the second TIU2 port without compatibility issues.

Thanks,

Bill

I have both on my layout. The Z1Ks power the main loops and the CW is running a bump and go trolley and an accessory on the accessory port. I agree that the styling of the CW is nice and the "all in one" construction of it is convenient. Mine is an early one. Early versions were problematic but the new ones are good. Regardless, I would advise the Z1k over the CW. Not only do you get more juice but the ability to run pretty much anything from all manufacturers. My Z1ks are both 10+ years old, never had an issue and have powered my old layout, 8x12 with multiple accessories and trains with no trouble. I also store the power bricks on a small table under the layout.

MTH Engines run much better on "Full Sine Wave Cycle" Voltage as supplied by the MTH Z-1000 Transformer than the "Chopped Sine Wave Cycle" Voltage supplied by the Lionel CW-80 Transformer.  You will have much less chance of frying a circuit board in your MTH Engines by using the MTH Z-1000 Transformer.  The CW-80 Transformer is not on the list supplied by MTH as being compatible with their engines and you will also have problems using the other buttons on top of the CW-80. You can use it for other brand engines or accessories on your layout but to use it with MTH engines you are asking for expensive trouble you don't want.
