Brian,

First thing you'll need is a position sensor to report back an electrical value (usually a voltage), or a software value (usually a number between 1 and 256, or better yet between 1 and 1024) that is proportional to the position of the elevator floor, as compared to the position of either the first shelf, or the last shelf (the "datum" or reference point).

This value will allow the controller to know precisely where the moving elevator is as it moves past each of the shelves.

Then you can use the AIU to start motion, by switching the lift motor on, and then stop motion when the elevator floor reaches the desired shelf (position sensor value).

There's obviously more but this is a start.  Is this along the lines of what you're thinking?
