Hello all ... 1947 Pete Maurer took out an ad for a O scale DD1 .....selling for $400.00...... ( a new Ford cost $1200).

Read the ad ... engine is driven like the prototype by the side rods ....oh yes see video for proof ...

At $400  there was a very limited market for such a piece ... rumors of 8 were made ....

Pete was a big train fan / collector who was very talented building trains ... he later built standard gauge pieces including a DD1 ...

Pete also built a nice model of a BiPolar in O gauge ... in the early 70's

Here are the two videos ...DD1 topless so you can see the drive ...certainly worth the price of admission alone ..but wait we'll throw in a video of the DD1 ( now with top) ..pulling 5 !!! Miniscale (diecast..about 5 pounds each!)  passenger cars ....running with outside 3rd rail ( of course) ..

sorry Mr Webmaster the videos filled up all the space ..next post with some stills .

Cheers Carey

Amazing- thanks for posting this. What's the story on the standard gauge DD1? Did Pete Maurer also make that? I want one!

I had the pleasure of seeing the inside of the preserved DD1 set at Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania- watching the giant traction motor and jackshaft drive arrangement in action from inside there must have really been something at speed!

Hello all

Nice photos of the mother DD1 .........  Pierre (Pete) Maurer made both the O scale ..and the standard gauge DD1's ...  Pete in the 60-70's    built various standard and O gauge pieces ..the most prolific model is the O gauge Bipolar ..bright orange and brass...   below a page from TCAQ from 1982 ...also showing Pete's box cabs ...DD1...and a killer L5 .( standard gauge) ....I've never seen the L5 ...but hope to one day  .

Standard Gauge DD1 runs great....this one was rebuilt by Bob Hendericks

You will notice that the roof overhang on the front has been trimmed flush with the front end.  Supposedly the Pennsy did this so those engines running to Flushing Meadows for the 1939 Worlds Fair appeared more modern.

If you like outside third rail in O gauge ...and standard gauge ....perhaps you will like it in 1/2" scale

Icken 1/2" scale switcher

Or may be outside third rail in HO is more your style

Still looking for something different ...OO gauge with outside third rail

So far ...I have not seen any CD / S gauge with outside third rail......but who knows what tomorrow will bring ..

Cheers Carey
