After 10 years away, I rebuilt my 21' by 21' layout and with a friend wired it up for DCS. I successfully ran DCS with TMC, without issues on my old layout. I used star wiring, light bulb fix, 16 gauge paired wire. My TIU and handheld are 10 years old, so are early generation versions. I have BCR's IN 1/2 my PS2 engines. I can run my TMC engines through my wiring scheme using my TMC remote. I cannot add any DCS engines ,even on a dedicated test track, through my DCS remote. I cannot run any TMC engines through my DCS remote, even though I can add those engines as type ins. Read option on DCS remote notes TIU, but no active DCS engines. I use a 180 watt brick for power. My track plan is a dogbone to dogbone setup, that wraps back onto itself, but basically a single track. I did not block the layout, as I did not have to do it on my old layout, which was just as large. When I power up my layout, the engines will click, but will not respond to add engine commands. Same goes for when I use the test track. I have a DCS tech that will check out my TIUs and remote to make sure there is not a electronic issue. At my age, I am more than happy to be able to run any mfg.s engines after 10 years, but DCS holds a fond spot in my train life and would like to sort out my issues. I have new batteries in the remote and have even tried tethering my remote direct to my TIU..Any ideas. Thanks, Michael

I am not Barry, but I stay at the same Holiday Inn he does. Do the PS-2 engine run fine in conventional? Test to see. If so, I think a TIU may be the issue, especially if it won't load on a test track. Just make sure Fixed 1 is powered and Red output of TIU to center rail of test track. Black to outside rail.
If you have more than 1 TIU try another on a simple test track. Has to be something simple. If you only have one TIU and nothing will load it very well can be a dead TIU. Make Sure DCS is turned on to all channels. G
When Michael says same thing happens on a test track---which I assume is a track apart from the layout---it makes me suspicious that it's engines rather than the layout. Just went through this with 2 PS2s with old batteries, and I can't precisely say what I did to get them running. Are these unaddable locos BCRed or with batteries? If the former, let them sit powered up for a minute or so before trying to add.
Michael,
First, it's possible that the TMCC issue and the DCS engine issue are due to two different causes.
First, a few questions:
- What release of the DCS software is in the TIU and in the remote?
- When you turn on the TIU, how many times does it blink?
- Are your DCS engines all in the remote from your last layout?
I can run my TMC engines through my wiring scheme using my TMC remote. I cannot add any DCS engines ,even on a dedicated test track, through my DCS remote. I cannot run any TMC engines through my DCS remote, even though I can add those engines as type ins.
Hmmm! Is the remote communicating with the tiu? What does pressing the 'read" (bottom left on dcs remote) say??
I think of dcs problems as 3 steps.... 1-remote tiu communications and 2- Tiu track signal and 3 engine problems. First step always is the remote tiu communications. If they're not communicating nothing else works period.
To Barry, TIU blinks once when powered up. My software is 2.21. ( Back then, it did all I wanted and with no computer, upgrading was a real pain. ) My engines were in the remote, but I deleted all in order to start fresh. On Monday, I am scheduled to bring my 2 TIUs and handheld into a DCS tech for a systems check. My TIUs have no # on the back of them, so I cannot give you what rev they are. As soon as I get them back, I will revisit the setup. My MTH engines are all PS2 from 8 to 9 years ago, and were not run in a long time. Gregg asked if the remote is communicating with TIU? I did tether them with the same non results. Hopefully, that might all it would be. Otherwise, I can run TMC fine ,till I get my DCS stuff back from the shop. If the remote is not compromised, would upgrading make sense, even with my old TIU's? Also, is it necessary to block my layout, as it is set up? Michael
Michael,
No, it's not necessary to block the layout, although it is recommended.
Regardless, let's wait until after the tech checks out your DCS before attempting any additional troubleshooting.
