Since color issues seem to be the only thing this hobby focuses on (sans cost) I figured I'd join.

No, that title has nothing to do with this post.  >>> This made sense before the forum made me change the title.

I did just acquire my first MTH European steamer with correct passenger cars and they are fantastic. Thanks you to Trainz for this find!

PS - RBP's ES44 looks awesome.

My MTH Chapelon 2-3-1 (Pacific) speaks French.

I have 2 years of German from college  (a long time ago) - don't speak it, but I understand a little and know the pronunciation pretty well.

"schnellzuglok" is pronounced: "shnel" "zoog" "lohk"; it essentially means "high-speed train locomotive".

The builder is Maffei (now Krauss-Maffei) and is pronounced "Mahf-eye" ("ei" is always said "eye").

Beautiful piece. I regret not getting the MTH SNCF 2-4-1 (Mountain).

Great video, Chris! The MTH O-Scale European locos and rolling stock are pretty cool. I've seen several videos of them in action. They are pretty detailed and have amazing sounds. It's awesome that they even have the PFA sequences in the correct language for each engine. It's a pity that MTH only made their European locos for a few years.

Two questions: Where is the tooling? and: Do you think that MTH should rerelease their European items again? If so, I think that they should add some new models to the product line, including some British diesels (Class 55, Class 37, Class 50, Class 47, Class 66, Class 70), the Flying Scotsman (in both as built and restored excursion versions), the Mallard, and others.

I fairly certain they sold the tooling. From what I've heard they didn't sell all that well in the 3-rail world. Which is why they are so expensive now. If they still had the tooling I'd hope to see some re-releases and newer models, but I just don't think the market is there to support it.

Actually the 'correct' Rheingold MTH locomotive, one of the postwar S3/6 build with the flat-front cab, would be the 80-3218, complete with the red/white stack band indicating it is in the Rheingold pool;  unfortunately it's an HO model........

Since there is a nice preserved set of Rheingold coaches in excursion service modellers should have few qualms about running their MTH cars behind other suitable motive power, mostly German or Swiss, both historic and contemporary.

Best, SZ

Great video!  What's up with the flickering headlights?  The plaque on car 2 is also interesting, it says "Basel SBB", and SBB is the Swiss Federal Railways.  Do you have any info on why it might have that?  I've been looking for one of these S3/6s for years.  But I am most interested in the blue version.  Anyone have one and want to make a tidy profit?

You're not alone in the search for that locomotive.

Congratulations Chris.  I know I was searching for that engine for a while and finally found the blue Bavarian one for MSRP in a small shop in the midwest last year.  Then came across the blue Rheinhold passenger cars new at a shop on the way to York this spring to complete the consist.  It is a special one.

Good historical review, Chris, and I miss reading those MTH historical blurbs from their catalogs. My father would've been interested in this one as he used to take us to the Bavarian Club for picnics and soccer games.

I also appreciate the foreign-based locomotives...and would've loved to have purchased the Kriegslok locomotive, or whatever MTH made that was close to it. Is there any chance we'd ever see these and others made again 3-rail?
