I use several, 1/43, 1/48 and 1/50 just place them properly and you will never know the differences.
I've seen people use Matchbox (~1/64) and 1/24, but RJT is correct IMHO. "Toy" cars that are not an exact scale can look fine too, if you're not after the highly scale look.
But watch yourself, Bigirish: Collecting autos can become addictive. It has actually become a second hobby with me. There are so many beautiful models out there.
The answer is fairly simple...1:43 represents the vast majority of available cars, so that is what most of us use. Most buses and large trucks available are 1:50. IMO, they look fine together.
Exactly right, Strogey. I have a New Ray '49 Buick and Jag XK120 that are the same length!(?) Somebody pointed out that that's probably the size their molding machine can handle.
Speaking of diecast cars....

Put this front-and-center on your layout and you should get a few smiles!
Bigirish,
I asked the same question a few months back and got some great responses along with the ones posted above. There were a bunch of awesome layout photos included by the members of this great forum. The link to that thread is below. Hope it helps you like it helped me.
