If you got the Bi-Directional ones as recommended, just put one across each Transformer output, Hot to Return.
For extra protection, Add one at each power drop, center rail to outside rail (the one wired up)
Spikes can come from elsewhere through the transformer, or from arcs and sparks on the layout. Snubbing them at all possible locations works best.
It has been said the best place for them is inside the engine on the center rail power roller to the frame, this is technically correct, but a real pain to do.
If you don't have bi-directional TVS diodes, they not useful for AC protection!
Gunrunnerjohn I got the ones you said to get in another thread, 7 amp?
They were pb- 188-ND
That part number is a 7A circuit breaker, not a TVS!
Here's a TVS that is right for the job: http://www.digikey.com/scripts...PV761=19&stock=1
Now I am confused!

The link is to a Unidirectional not Bidirectional Diode. G
CRAP! Sorry, I did a quick search and picked the wrong part!
