I run strictly in a command environment; DCS and TMCC.
18V to the track from Lionel PH180's.
I often run my older Post War aluminum passenger cars. At 18V, they are VERY bright. In another thread I saw a link to a post by Dale M about placing a single diode in series with the bulb(s).
Is there a particular diode I should use for this case?

I'd use 1 standard 1N4003, should be fine. Also, consider alternating the direction of the diode for each car so you have half-n-half each way in your passenger consist. This will minimize the possible DC offset on the track and the issues that might raise.
