I'd like to disassemble the switch mechanism on a pair of Lionel Pre-War 011s (to both clean them as well as to add a fixed voltage source) but can't seem to get into them.  I removed the two screws from the sides of the top plate - but things didn't seem to want to budge and I didn't want to apply more force than what I was using.  Feels like the lantern housing might be holding onto something underneath.

Haven't been able to find many postings (except one and this one ), notes, or service information (except for a parts listing on Olsen’s web site) on the interwebs about these switches.  Does anyone have pointers as to how these come apart?  And/or any suggestions about adding a fixed voltage capability?

This is an old post but I'll reply since I just spent hours getting these  (012) to work. You have to turn the switch over and carefully pry back the tabs ( they may break) and take the bottom out. The switch motor is bolted to the top plate. There is a wire running from the center rail to the solenoid.  I would think one could disconnect this from the center rail and run it to a separate power source. You would have to drill a hole in the bottom plate to run the wire through or just leave the plate off. I haven't tried this, however.

It's never too late to revive a "zombie" thread!   I still have these sitting under my bench, so over the holidays I'll take a crack at them again and report back on lessons learned.
