I ill be purchasing a 170M Ross 4-way yard switch with a DZ1000 switch machine. Even though Steve (Ross) told me a DZ1008 is not not neccessary for the 170M I am curious about the relay. I have looked at the Z-Stuff website but still confused. I have another email into Steve at Ross but wanted other opinions.

I am looking for a general description of the purpose of the relay.

I found that -

The relay is 'used on long switch machines to maintain power for locos with certain pick up roller distances'. How does the relay do this?

The relay is used for switch non-derailment features - ???

The relay is used for track power control with switches - ???

Thanks

Joe

It powers the switch lead tracks depending on how the switch is set-straight or curved.  These rails can't be powered continously or there would be a short, so by using the DZ-1008 relay it will power these rails as needed, again, depending how how the switch is thrown.  They work great, but make sure to check it on your bench before installing.  There has been a run of faulty DZ-1008s recently.

Personally I would use toggled power to each separate siding, rather than switch power to the active siding with the DZ1008, or any other relay.

If you were going to use it to switch power to the active siding, your nomal 18 VAC track power (with DCS signal) would have to be connected to the common contact, with the siding hot rails connected to the NO and NC contacts.

I use quite a few DZ1008's on the layout, but only for such things as crossing gates and signals. Works great.

Steve:

If by asking 'How do you hook up DCS and legacy' you mean seting up the switch through an SC unit for use with a CAB 2 or through an AIU for the DCS handheld then I think a DZ2500 switch machine is needed. I don't believe a DZ1000 will get you there but once again I am guessing. Someone else needs to verify.

dz-1000s can be used with an AIU.

The coil power for the dz-1008 should be 14V.

The dz-1008 can switch at least track power.  I forget the exact rating of the contacts.

A nice feature of the dz-1008 is that it can switched with a very small amount of current.  There is still a draw on aux power through the coil, but the actual trip power is low.
