Early vs Late MTH ITAD device.

The early ITAD devices snapped on to the track and drove the unit plus the accessory. I have been using a number of them and they work fine. The new ones that I just purchased look like railroad mainline cabinets. It says in the instructions of the newer units to use auxiliary power and not track power. Just wondering why this is. Does anyone know if the basic design of the MTH ITAD units has changed? If it is the same circuit, then why can't track power be used?
