East River Tubes

This is a concept to have a diorama of some subway tubes sticking out a few inches from the fascia at the river on my railroad. The idea is to mimic the subway tubes under the East River in New York City. The whole diorama need only be perhaps 6 inches long. Make it with one or as many tubes as you like.

The tubes are pieces of 6 inch diameter PVC tubing from the plumbing section of Home Depot or Lowes. Paint the inside of the tubes a light cement color.

The brown frame supports the tubes and it is made from 3/4" plywood. Epoxy the tubes to the plywood so the tubes protrude about 3 inches to the front. Attach the plywood to the inside of the bench fascia with screws.

The gray cement work inside of the tube is made of pieces of foam material, or balsa wood and glued to the tubes.

Lights in the tubes and cars are warm white 3mm LEDs. Drill holes for the LEDs in the tubes at the 2 and 10 o'clock, and space the 2 inches apart. Size the hole diameter for a snug fit of the LED. Power the LEDs with a DC transformer, or whatever power is in use for accessories on your railroad. Glue the LEDs.

The track rails are made from solid rails pulled from pieces of MTH Real Trax. Epoxy the rails in place.

The cars are made from two junk box heavyweight passengers cars. Cut the the cars leaving enough length to retain one truck. RMT shortie cars will work too. Epoxy the cars to the track.
