I bought a few rail box cars and am very pleased with the items and the over all transaction.  The box cars were brand new - never removed from the cardboard boxes.

There is a heavy odor of cigarette smoke in the box cars and the cardboard boxes.  I wish to de-odorize them.  I would leave them outside to air out, but at this time of the year it would not do much good, and with the humidity it might do more harm.  So I was contemplating buying some cedar balls (the kind you put in shoes) to help eliminate the odor in the boxes and cars.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had to deodorize things with this type of odor and what elixir they used.

Thanks.

Well for engines with smoke units JT Megasteam's "Eliminator" works wonders on the smell of nicotine. I recently deodorized a Lionel locomotive that way.

For rolling stock and boxes however all I could ever do was let them air out in the garage with some dryer sheets in them. There was still always a hint that remained however so I too am interested to see more replies to this thread.

OdorXit products. Search their products on the internet. It is chlorine dioxide. I bought the pouch type. You take the boxes and trains and put them in a sealed container (garbage can) with a small computer fan....I had mildew attack some train boxes. The stuff works wonders-it kills the mold and the spores..

It also kills any other type of odor.. I must note that you may want to only put the shells in. As the gas can attch some metals.

Its called nicotine, and the gummy film residue, will come off with

Simple Green, solution, on the boxes.  If the cars have been in the box, and not effected by film,  take them, out and put coffee (new)  in bottom of a box, and set cars in the box, lightly close lid. Coffee will take beer, onions, and other smells out of

transport trailers, and in much less time frame.
