I have had  toy train layouts of postwar era  plus O scale (2rail) layouts, complete with scale buildings, figures, diecast cars and fine details of everything I could scratchbuild ( but certainly Not a rivet counter). As I am a child of the 50's heritage. I discovered a latent desire to make my PW type rebuilt layout more toy like in it's enjoyment. Simplicity of the colorful plastic production era just  brings back a sense of play that I had tucked away in my psyche. So, I remember the few plasticville structures and a couple of plastic vehicles I played with and wore out  60 years ago.  After attending the Westchester toy and Train Show this year i had this awakening. I am now  thinking I can mix sizes of several makes of vehicles. I was so scale size conscious in my past! I found that I really Like colorful toy vehicles!  Funny how the pendulum swings back after many decades, I feel fortunate to enjoy a more flexible mixture. I must mention that many forum members photos and videos have influenced the possible  mix and match toys concept. Lol.

Anyone have a similar transition of interests?

Best of everything to you for 2019.

I'm not sure this is a transition, but I like to make Postwar accessories fit in to realistic looking scenery without changing the accessory.

I do the same with Postwar trains and Postwar track and 022 turnouts. I believe what I like is a form of hi-rail.

This transition, if it is one, happened about 30 years ago when as an adult, I first took stab at scenery on a layout.

I like a combination of toy-like and realism. There are shades of gray in this combination, most of which I like.

To elaborate further, the toylike equipment, ie., O22 switch tracks, has charm which I like a lot, but I also get excited when I run or see a modern locomotive that looks, sounds and smells like a real steam or diesel engine.

I don't think you'd REALLY want the smells of the real thing in your house...

Well, I guess you're right about that since I prefer pine and cedar over diesel smoke fluid. LOL
