I caught the SG tinplate bug a while back.... I thought it was just gorgeous "stuff". Most of my purchases this past year have been standard gauge.  I'm starting to ask myself if I'm being unrealistic in going SG due to my modest 6x16 train board. Tinplate O gauge doesn't appeal to me as much simply due to lack of product.  Has anyone else ever been in this dilemma?

It a difficult decision. My layout will not be "huge", but bigger than yours. One thing that will help is my outer rail will be 5 rail so I can use the same space for either. The real problem is storage/display space. I already have too much hidden from view. In std gauge, I need to keep the size on the smaller side whenever possible. I have one set of Lionel state cars and the one set of Flyer Presidential cars from you. That gives me one "big" one from each maker. If I'm smart, those will be the last of the biggies......................until another deal comes along

Is there anything you could do about the 6' portion of your layout?
If you could get just enough wider to have 2 loops around the periphery with 72 curves I think you could do amazing things with that size! I got the bug for 7 1/2" gauge outdoor trains. Now they take some room!

6x16 is enough, although we can always wish we had more. That will get you an outer loop of STD-57 and an inner of STD-42 with enough room for some sidings, buildings, and accessories. If you can somehow stretch your space to seven feet you can get 72" curves, but remember, all of the old stuff (except Boucher) was made to run on 42" curves so the 57" gives you some room to play. 57" should also let you run a Lionel Hiawatha or Vanderbilt if you so wish (they will run on 42, but they will be unhappy).

I say go for it. I find Standard Gauge a lot more fun than tinplate 0. Obviously that's a question of taste (de gustibus non disputandum est) but the big stuff gives me a big smile. I have a loop of STD-87 around the outside of my 0 gauge layout and I love to watch a McKeen car or a 392E and some passenger cars roll. I run mostly scale equipment on the 0 gauge, but for sheer whimsical fun there's nothing like Standard Gauge.
