This expansion uses a 2nd sheet of 4 X 8 (I am using 2" thick foam).   It creates a long run around both sheets, with two independent loops inside.   Up to four trains can run comfortably, with two well-matched for speed on the outside route if using LC+ or some other command control.

It also adds a Wye, and an O-72 "Y" turnout, a 90-degree crossing, and a return loop, so this addition adds a lot of fun.

The addition includes an optional access hatch, which I anticipate as a hill/mountain made of 2" foam layers, that is light enough to just lift up vertically.   The access hatch also provides access to some great photo shots of trains on the crossing, switching between 4X8s, and running the long straightaways.

This looks really good. I'm truly impressed on how much running you can get in that corner space. I really hadn't thought of using all the way to the edge and a bit beyond to run O-48, and the curved platform edges really add to it.

I also really like your original article. Really great stuff. Thanks so much for continuing on with that design.

Best I had done before was the attached. Yours is SO much better in every way.

Thanks much Phil!

Your plan is very good as well - different philosophy.   I like it a lot.  Multiple routes, and the embedded return loops are cool.

Just to be clear, on my plan the track does not go beyond 4X8 - none of the curves are entirely O-48, they have O-36 mixed in to stay within the 4X8.    -Ken

Hi Ken,

I really like this update! I was inspired when I saw the original version of the Cisco RR (run 275), and that inspiration is part of what motivated me to jump back in to O gauge railroading after a 25-year break. I've got two young kids that like to run the trains now that they see how much fun I am having. There are just a handful more  sections of track that I need to complete the original version of the Cisco RR (in the mean time I have been having fun with a corner Christmas tree layout). I always thought it was clever how your plan had the ability to be adapted for connection to another section of track. Lately, I have been wondering what that other section would look like, and I was pleasantly surprised to see your expansion design.  Good stuff!

Regards,

Brian
