I needed a longer clamp for a structure i am building, I took 2 Irwin hobby bar clamps apart, drilled another hole in the shaft and put a nut and bolt through the hole and soldered a piece of wire in the other hole. I could have used 2 bolts but I only had one. Now I have expanded a 4 1/2" bar clamp to a 10" clamp...It works great.

Gene, Harbor Freight has a good variety of clamps in various lengths. Best thing is that they're cheap and work well.

I find the Harbor Freight clamps to be inferior to the Irwin's even thought their both made in China. The HF clamps slip. I bought two to try them out since the are so cheap, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Good idea. I may do that on some of mine. I have big Irwin's too, but they're too clumsy for gluing model buildings together.
I use the Irwin style clamps 6", 12", 24" 36" & 48".
You can also interlock them in odd numbered open link chain like combinations for extension use.
If you have a sensitive touch you could use 1/2" or 3/4" pipe clamps and run them out to unlimited lengths.
