Help - Bought a MTH Great Northern R2 #20-3054-1 on the bay and the sound is faint. Installed new battery, adjusted the pod on the tender bottom and tried all volume adjustments on the hand held. Nothing worked. COULD THE POD BE BAD? Any thoughts?

I'd open the tender and check the speaker, for physical damage or a loose wire. Also check that the plug to which the speaker wires connect is fully seated in the board.
It has a 16 ohm speaker, which is a unique size and no longer made. Most likely the speaker is flaking and has gone bad. It takes a BF-0000021 45mm speaker. The best you can do it get a 45mm flat speaker to use as a replacement. Or find a 45mm round 16 ohm speaker.
The tender style dictated this. Otherwise you need to modify a speaker holder to get the normal 50mm speaker up in the tender. G
