In the Fastrack modular layout guide ( http://lionelllc.files.wordpre...oad-manual-ver-2.pdf ), they illustrate back-to-back 072 switches used as crossovers (on page 33).  I was curious how reliable this combination is in regards to derailing while moving between the parallel track.  They also show a siding using an 072 with an adjoining 072 curve, thus making a small S (reverse) curve.  Has anyone tried this and does it run smoothly?

I don't use FasTrack, so I don't know for sure, but O72 should work okay for a crossover unless you have very large engines/passenger cars. However, it would be best to add a straight track if you have the space. The siding should be okay because one usually slows down on sidings, but a straight track there is preferable too. You don't have much choice though if you want the crossover. Technically, you can do crossovers with any turnout, even O27, you just can't run all the engines you might want to or go through very fast.
