I picked this MTH operating coaling tower up over a week ago and my son and I have been palying with it...nice piece, but tonight it hit me that the lionel fastrack we have won't fit in there since it's too wide...anyone running fastrack come up with a narower straight section to fit in such a situation? I can trim the sides down to fit in but it's be nice to find something better?

You can use an operating fastrack piece which has sides that can be removed. Of course this piece is a little costly but it will work well.
Yeah, cutting one sacrificial piece seems to be the only way aside from two transition tracks on either side of he structure and a tube track inside.
Had a similar problem with fast track for one of my MTH overpasses. Used a drummel grinder to take off some edge so the fast track would fit. In a coaling station some coal debris will obscure any grinding marks.
