Brad, I use an Iwata Eclipse-CS for most of my work. I also have a little less expensive Badger 105. Lots more expensive airbrushes out there if you need really fine detail. I use it for general painting on trains and RC trucks.
I use a Paasche VL. Also use a Iwata. Paasche is easy to use and get parts for. The VL is a two stage type, press down for air and pull back for paint. The farther you pull the wider the pattern it sprays. I use around 20-25 lbs. of airpressure to spray. I usually thin the paint for whatever I am painting---weathering or basic color spraying.
+2 on the passche VL series. I also use the basic Passche H series airbrush for many spray projects. This company has been around a long time and they have full parts support.
