I am wondering if anyone has turned a tank car into a Fuel tank for a Diesel service depot. I am thinking about adding stairs and a spillwall then using the MTH fuel and water column below with adjacent water tower. Any suggestions or examples of finished diesel service facilities?

To directly answer your question -- no, I haven't. But I'm about to engage in a somewhat related project. I just bought a Marx animated refueling station:

refueling station

The animation works -- a bit buzzy, but I have some ideas on how to reduce that. It is missing one of the refueling hoses, and though I might be able to source a replacement, I think I'll end up having to fabricate one. While I'm at it, I have some ideas on how to repaint to reduce the cast plastic look. Hadn't thought of it before, but perhaps I should add some form of fuel tank to go along with the piece! Thanks, and good luck on your project!

Do a Forum search: "Build your own water column" or maybe fuel column.. There is a thread with lots of information and ideas...

Train Watcher - good idea! In the early first generation diesel years what you are suggesting was a quite common thing.  Often tank car tanks senz trucks and couplers were repurposed for diesel fuel storage.   Sometime railroads, during those early diesel years,  even set out several tank cars on a siding adjacent to the fueling track and pumped oil directly from the tank car into the diesel locomotives.

My only suggestion would be to use a single dome tank car if possible.  The two dome cars had two compartments inside whereas the single dome car contained one compartment.  Of course with a two dome car you could dispense both high test and regular

Whichever car you use for your project, please show us photos of the final product

Wonder how many post war Sunoco tanks have been repurposed over the years....

I did the same with one. It's across the main from the yard so I added a pipe into the "ground". Haven't done a dispenser on the other side but I did repurpose a sand tower from a Lionel set.

My layout is steam-diesel era. The EPA/ DEC's of the world hadn't started requiring secondary containment yet.....
