This train was one of two passenger trains on my "have to have list" since I got back into O-gauge eleven years ago: I rode the City of Los Angeles (from Cheyenne to LA and back) in 1956 or so . . .   had to have one.  It's taken a long time to find just what I wanted.

Anyway, I've had the Legacy A-A E9 set for several months - since Lionel released it, and I found an MTH B unit that matches well very well.  I was waiting for two four-car 18" passenger car sets from Lionel (UP set and Milwaukee Road Olympian set) to combine into a seven-car set, but when Lionel revised their shipping schedule and slid them out from this October to next October, I gave up.  Just as well.  This just-released MTH five-car 70' set with two-car sleeper-diner is wonderful.  The whole train is 189 inches (15 feet, 10 inches) long, and will go on a new 16 foot shelf I am making for it - when not running that is.  This will not be a shelf queen.

Legacy A-A E9s with an MTH Premier B unit which is a wonderful match (even the road numbers match) although it does not have snow guards.  I will add those and remove the rear coupler from the observation car in time, but not soon.

It is a long train, and just barely makes it around the layout: these cars clear some of my cliff-faces near the tracks by only 1/4 inch on curves.

Really nice looking.  I love a long passenger train.  Scale 70 foot cars look a bit strange going around curves, even 72" and 84" ones, but I can live with it.  I love the look.

Interiors and nicely done.  Trucks are good looking, too.

I counted and every single rivet is there!   Figures aren't that detailed, but no one will notice when the train sweeps by.  I am very happy with this train!

Lee,

I love it!  The Legacy E Units are so nice: wish I'd ordered a set and I'm a UP steam only guy!

I own a LOT of the MTH UP passenger cars, all bought off the secondary market.  For the money, they're hard to beat.  I also have the older Lionel "City of Denver" UP set and LOVE it.  But, like you, I won't wait on a shipping schedule that keeps moving to the right.  With that said, I didn't order any of the new Lionel UP sets, but found some K-line UP 21" cars.  They should be here today.  I can't wait to see them!

Also, MTH shipped the UP RPO and 2-pack baggage/coach I had on pre-order.  Mine should be here this week from Patrick's.  Can't wait to get them.

You sure are correct-nothing like a long passenger train, especially in armour yellow!

Excellent move, Lee.

Years ago when there was more stability in the manufacturing side of the house, we could pretty much count on Lionel offering B-unit add-ons (that would actually match) in a subsequent catalog or two if they weren't offered initially.  Nowadays, even if items are offered in the same catalog, we're hearing reports of mismatched paint finishes between powered and dummy A units.

I do like that when MTH offers diesel locomotive configurations, they typically offer an ABA set (powered A's, dummy B), along with an optional dummy B.  Love the look of an ABBA config.  Only thing better is an ABBBA!    But at 16' with just the ABA, that's already a mighty long train!!!  Enjoy!!!

Lee, I too love that train.  My path has been different though.

My first O gauge set was the Kline UP City of Los Angeles with ABA E units and 18" cars.  I love the cars but the K-Line E units need to be either updated or replaced.  I thought about the new Lionel units, but wasn't sure the yellows would match closely enough for me.

Actually I can't run it.  I have the layout apart for the changes I make, and frustrating as it is, I can't power up the track right now or for about a week or more right now: the work has to be done.  I wanted to energize it just to make the lights work on the cars.  I tested each alone of a workbench when they arrived yesterday to make sure they work.  I know the locos run well because I ran them some time back (posted a video then, I think).

Well, there's just been one case of that reported, that I'm aware of. Probably too soon to conclude that the sky's falling.
