A forum member alerted me to the auction on EBAY of a damaged Weaver Troop sleeper. I won the auction and I finally now have a good set of the Allied Cushioned trucks for use on the undecorated Weaver Troop Sleeper I picked up from Peterson Supply earlier this year.

I took apart the damaged troop sleeper today. The frame was severely warped, but the car was otherwise completely intact. I was able to salvage the trucks, interior insert, and the lighting strip. The frame was warped to the point that it broke on one end when I tried to removed it from the car. I did have to snip the wire lead to the truck frame used for the ground for the lights. I could not budge the small screw that held the wire on the truck. This screw also holds the truck side frames to the truck bolster. Splicing the wires will be much easier then dealing with a broken truck.

The undecorated car will be painted and lettered for NYC - Maintenance of of Way. As a test I decided to see how the clear plastic window inserts could be removed from the damaged car. By using a small screw driver I was able to easily pry the clear plastic inserts from the car.

I think I may have a source for NYC MOW decals. I cannot find a picture of an NYC MOW car. does anyone know what color one might have been? Since I now have the interior insert for the undecorated car I thought I might try and paint the interior insert. Does anyone know what color the interior of the car may have been?

Thanks,

Richard

Hey Richard,

Looks like a good project you got going there.  I know it will be an outstanding railcar when you finish with it.

Enjoyed being with you yesterday...I think we finally got the 'foundations' [good track and electric work]of the RW modules nailed down pretty good.  I was amazed at how smoothly David's engine ran yesterday on our test run.

Thank you for insisting we do the track and wiring right!!!  It has and will pay off for us.

See you soon,

Frank

Thanks Frank,

One more good weekend and we should be done with the RW layout.

Trainchief,

I also have two of those troop sleepers converted to express cars. I will have to keep an eye on them. No sign of warping yet.

Along with the MTH curmbling truck syndrome we now have to be on the lookout for Weaver warping frames.

prrhorseshoecurve,

There was no evidence of pastic melted in the are where the metal frame broke.

Thanks,

 RG

Prototype troop trains ran 1 kitchen car for every 5 sleepers.

I picked up 5 Weaver troop sleepers when they were first introduced a couple of years ago one developed a severely warped frame, the rest were OK. I spoke with a Weaver rep and was told they were out of production and they didn't have any frames. I had no luck finding a replacement car until I found a MofW version at york. I used the floor for the repair and made a new floor from Evergreen Plastics for the MofW
