Chris...nope.  If you click on the last reply on a thread, you will go directly to that last reply.  If you click on "First unread post", you will go to the first post that you have not already read.  So lets say there were three posts when you first read the thread and then later a fourth person makes a post.  If you come back and click on that thread again, you will have to scroll through the posts to get to the one or ones you have not read yet...BUT...if you click on "First unread post" you will be taken to the first post that has been posted since you last visited.  A great feature if you don't want to scroll through a bunch of posts you have already read and also great for those of us that can't remember where we left off!!!

David...it is immediately to the right of the topic and says.."First unread post"

This is a great feature - it allows you to see every posting since you last looked, and that is often difficult to determine.  I love it.

How can they possibly know what you read?  The internet knows everything!

Serious, it knows how far down you scrolled in a thread, not if you actually read the thing.  Maybe you were just looking at the pictures, etc.

Actually, it doesn't know that, these features (and I just tested) track the last post that was in a thread the most recent time you were in it. For example, if you open a 10 page thread and only go through page 1, then exit the thread and come back later when it's a 15 page thread, when you click read first unread, it will take you to page 10, even though you only read page 1.

It seems to me that it knows the last time that you were logged on to the forum and considers any posts to any thread after that as the beginning point of 'last read'.  I don't think it knows by individual threads.

Also Bill, it's not using cookies since I use a library computer and it's showing for me.

I retract my 'by individual thread' comment.  I just now opened a thread that has recent posts but it considered September 9ths' posts as my starting position, so maybe it is by individual thread.
