What's this "First unread post" mean?
Replies sorted oldest to newest
Looks to me like it's the first response to that particular thread that hasn't been opened yet by you. Tricky, huh? Looks useful.
Just what it says.
You now have a choice of going to the last reply in the thread or the first UNREAD post in the thread. In other words...whever you left off from your previous visit to the thread. If you are reading a thread for the first time, it will take you to the first post in the thread instead of the last.
Great addition to the capabilities of the OGR fora. Takes the guesswork out of trying to remember where you are on a thread, particularly those that are very active.

I normally click on the underlined new at the right hand side, it's been there for months.
Good idea!

Great idea,thanks Rich

Good seeing you last Saturday. My grandson kept talking about "the guy who owned the train and liked blowing the whistle!"
Kevin
It just showed up for me today, and I already love it!
Can they do this without those nasty "tracking cookies" ?
If you click on "Last reply" or "First unread post" It takes you to the same place?
Thanks Rich, I love it! Very convenient.
Where is it?
Chris...nope. If you click on the last reply on a thread, you will go directly to that last reply. If you click on "First unread post", you will go to the first post that you have not already read. So lets say there were three posts when you first read the thread and then later a fourth person makes a post. If you come back and click on that thread again, you will have to scroll through the posts to get to the one or ones you have not read yet...BUT...if you click on "First unread post" you will be taken to the first post that has been posted since you last visited. A great feature if you don't want to scroll through a bunch of posts you have already read and also great for those of us that can't remember where we left off!!!
David...it is immediately to the right of the topic and says.."First unread post"
Alan
Where is it?
Same question
"Where is it?".....OK, again...when you look at the topic choices before you click on them, immediately to the right is "First unread post".
Alan
Excellent, thanks OGR.
Ok, now I see it but I usually just click on the recent tab on the right hand side. No wonder I never saw it.
OK got it. Thanks Alan.
You're welcome Chris!
Alan
Great addition. Really find it to be very convenient.
thanks
You find this on the home page for each forum, not in the Recent Posts list on the right.

very nice
Thank you Rich. - JZ
I like it. Thank you.

how can it possibly know what I read? if I click on the first response and scroll down, how does it know when I stopped reading?
This is a great feature - it allows you to see every posting since you last looked, and that is often difficult to determine. I love it.
How can they possibly know what you read? The internet knows everything!
Serious, it knows how far down you scrolled in a thread, not if you actually read the thing. Maybe you were just looking at the pictures, etc.
just tried it on threads I have never read and it stops somewhere in the middle, is it guessing now?
This is a good addition. Now if we can only get back the info on how many times a post has been read.
Just another good reason that makes this Forum the best in our hobby.

Actually, it doesn't know that, these features (and I just tested) track the last post that was in a thread the most recent time you were in it. For example, if you open a 10 page thread and only go through page 1, then exit the thread and come back later when it's a 15 page thread, when you click read first unread, it will take you to page 10, even though you only read page 1.
To bad there isn't a fix for those potato heads that start a thread full of questions and never return to acknowledge the follow-up replies or answer responders questions.
Sorry pet peeve of mine....

I'll sure as heck second THAT!!!!
Very nice addition!
Thank you.
It seems to me that it knows the last time that you were logged on to the forum and considers any posts to any thread after that as the beginning point of 'last read'. I don't think it knows by individual threads.
Also Bill, it's not using cookies since I use a library computer and it's showing for me.

I retract my 'by individual thread' comment. I just now opened a thread that has recent posts but it considered September 9ths' posts as my starting position, so maybe it is by individual thread.
I like it

Is this feature still working? Doesn't for me. Takes me to the first post everytime.
I have IE9 and IE10. They are both set to clear browsing history when I close them. So it sort of cancels out this feature.
