I was thinking you were using the PICAXE chip in some of your devices and I found this earlier. You probably already have something like it, but thought you might be interested? Surely there is always room for one more gadget. And it's on sale too!
Actually, I've used the Arduino and for embedded processors, I use the PIC. Never used that system, though it's PIC based.
A PICAXE chip is a standard Microchip PIC microcontroller that has been pre-programmed with the PICAXE bootstrap firmware code. The bootstrap code enables the PICAXE microcontroller to be re-programmed 'in position' directly via a simple 'three wire' download cable connection. This eliminates the need for an (expensive) conventional PIC programmer, making the whole download programming system a low-cost USB cable. The same software and download cable is used for all PICAXE chip sizes and project boards. - See more at: http://www.picaxe.com/What-Is-...sthash.WON4xl8T.dpuf
For some reason I was thinking you were using the PICAXE in some of the boards you had made? Memory isn't what is used to be...I knew there were different versions, but didn't realize they were that different other than size? May have to get my feet wet on these one of these days.
There are several "canned" PIC packages with their own functions built in to their firmware, that's similar to the Arduino using the Atmel processor and cooking their own boot and initialization code into it. Just a way to make it easier for someone to custom program.
