Obviously not powerful enough yet, but think about being able to beam power wirelessly to individual locomotives. Fascinating possibilities.

A good EE friend of mine did some research on this for his masters thesis - fascinating stuff. The applications go far beyond what is listed in the article. There are numerous industrial applications as well - for example being able to potentially "beam" power to devices underground.
A couple of years ago I watched a program about space travel with the ship being powered by alternate sources. One was a light beam projected to the craft.
I don't see it being used for our trains but I've been wrong before!
Given the flap about cell phones causing cancer, I wonder what the feeling is about high energy RF being beamed to your wearable devices?

WayBackMachine (my memory base) had articles from 30's and 40's had articles on building model cars running on carpet. Wires were underneath carpet and supplying power to car.
Thats only 80 or so years ago.
More controllable than a lightning strike, for untethered power. This sounds like it
might make possible the elimination of the third rail....and without the wiring problems
of Y's, reverse loops, and turntables encountered with today's two rail.
