A good EE friend of mine did some research on this for his masters thesis - fascinating stuff. The applications go far beyond what is listed in the article. There are numerous industrial applications as well - for example being able to potentially "beam" power to devices underground.
A couple of years ago I watched a program about space travel with the ship being powered by alternate sources. One was a light beam projected to the craft.
I don't see it being used for our trains but I've been wrong before!
WayBackMachine (my memory base) had articles from 30's and 40's had articles on building model cars running on carpet. Wires were underneath carpet and supplying power to car.
