I have an issue with smoke fluid leaking into my engine (6-28078 steam engine) which has been modified from a mechanical to a motor driven smoke unit (Lionel 610-8057-200 smoke unit).  I carefully put in smoke fluid in the engine but I still get fluid in the engine, so I want to replace the gaskets.  Lionel smoke unit gasket (610-8057-216 GASKET / FAN DRIVEN SMOKE UNIT / RECTANGULAR), is listed as unavailable.

Also should there a gasket between the top of the smoke unit inlet and the body of the steam engine where you put in the smoke fluid?  Or what can I use to seal between the smoke unit inlet and the body of the engine to prevent fluid leaking into the engine?

Thanks for your comments,

Bob D

If you can't get a replacement part, the gasket you listed that seals the smoke unit chamber looks easy to fabricate from gasket material available at any auto parts store. But are you sure that's where the fluid is leaking from? My first suspicion would be the stack area, which you asked about. One (or more) good old postwar smoke unit gaskets might do the trick there, and I know these are available from any parts dealer for like 50 cents each.

Thanks John & Jerry for your suggestions.  I agree that the most likely place of the leak is in the stack area.  What  ordering information is there for the brass tube and best place to order from?

As for the washer, I will look for a parts dealer, but has anyone tried a rubber washer used in water faucets?

Thanks,

Bob D
