I am in the planning stage of building an art deco factory (front only). I have a vinyl sign shop, so I patterned all the glazed white facia blocks in white vinyl, (and it turned out pretty well). I just need to figure out how to do the large glass block patterned walls. This is the old Isaly Dairy plant in Youngstown Ohio. I am doing this from foam core. I would prefer to do the glass block out of a vellum, so I can light the building. I just don't have any idea where or how to make the pattern for the printing...

Thanks

Isaly Dairy is where our farm shipped milk, clear into the late 1960's. I have an Isaly Collection, the Isaly MTH cars, The Isaly corner store, and a freezer of Klondike bars! Isaly Dairy was the originator of the Klondike, and it is very possible that our milk was used in this delicious dessert. In O scale, this front is going to be close to 5' long, however, with my shelf layout that goes around my high ceiling family room, there will be a place for this imposing structure, especially when softly lit.

If I understand what you want to do is to simulate the framing and the lines that represent the individual glass blocks?

If you are planning to use vellum, you might be able to just draw the windows in a cad type program or possibly Adobe Illustrator or any type of program that is vector based. Thin black lines in a grid represent the blocks. Two thin lines close together represent the frames. Then just print it on vellum.

Interesting enough I have been looking for the isaly's  ( I Shall Always Love You Sweetheart ) script for this building, I am from Warren Ohio where we had several Isaly.s deli & Ice cream shops in the city.up till the late 50's so when i saw this building I thought it would make a great Islays but have not found the lettering to complete it, Any help would be appreciated

Cool building project Rogerpete !  We will enjoy seeing your progress in the future.

Jim, I am from Warren as well, and recall one last Isaly's on the west side of town even into the 1970's.  Aside from the Ice Cream was the famous chip chopped ham.

I have an MTH Isaly's on my layout.  Maybe we need a Miller Engineering sign next.

I actually was checking out the miller site today, gonna contact them! A red Isaly sign would be amazing! Great minds think alike! I was looking at the experimenter kits too.

Jim- I work in Lordstown, and I have the Isaly font you seek. I actually received it from Isaly with permission in writing to use only on hobby/model railroading.  I cut a bunch in red reflective vinyl, ready to apply, but I can do any color you need. This is diecut, not printed on clear vinyl, so when applied, the background clearly shows through. I did this batch in red reflective, because, well I had some left over from a local firetruck job I did. I can meet up with you, give you one, and you can see if it is too small/big for your use.

I have an older version of Corel, but not adobe. I wasn't looking for the easy way out, I just don't like reinventing the wheel, so I thought I would ask in case someone knew where a free pattern was posted or had a file they would like to share without having the copyright police knock on my door.

Anyone that needs Isaly help, just email me!

Thanks

Roger

Wow thanks,  the building is 7 1/2 wide and the 3/4 inch high so i would think something about 1/2 to 5/8 would work good  the originals were always black but beggers cant be choosers,

I didn't mean to take over the other post but the mention of islay's triggered my need

I have many fond childhood memories of the Isaly's plant in Youngstown, since I grew up just a couple of miles from the facility and passed it frequently.  From the west side of town where I lived, the primary access into downtown Youngstown was via Mahoning Ave., which runs alongside the plant.  I visited there several times (with boyhood school classes) to view the process of making milk and ice cream.  The building, now a U-Haul facility, remains as one of the more significant Youngstown landmarks in a town where many landmarks have long since, and sadly, disappeared.

That siren atop the tower was an air raid siren "back in the day," and is now a storm warning siren.

I definitely look forward to seeing photos of the completed model!

This will be an "extended project". I am finishing up my clay tile plant, (exact replica of one we had in town in the 1920's), then onto Isalys. This will be contructed in sections, and as they come together, I shall post. But, keep the tips & info coming. I am by no means a rivit counter, but I also want it to look correct.

I need to swing by the building & get some additional close up shots.

My wife of 48 years learned how to make a Sky Scraper ice cream cone in that building. She worked there through high school and took a bus from Cambell Ohio to get to that after school job. And if you walked home from Idora Park down Gleenwood you had to stop at the Isaly plant on the way home and get a Sky Scraper cone. What a place in the history of Y-Town. I look forward to seeing your progress and creativity with this project. Good luck!

On my lay out, I have fashioned Idora Park on the South Side of Youngstown. Here's one of the pictures of the Wild Cat Coaster , the Idora sign and the neighborhood it was situated in.

Tried to email John from the address listed in this forum, it came back bad address- Can some one get me a correct address? I am not one who is interested in re-inventing the wheel!

Thanks
