A new and superb addition to my Hidden Pass Junction RR is the ALARCO Grain Elevator Complex, or granary.

Custom built specifically for the HPJRR to fit perfectly in the space available, the complex is now the eye-catching attraction of my layout. The main structure and silos were designed to fit on a curve; a not-very-common venue for a granary, but it does have prototypes. After I installed the structures exactly as they were built, I added the piping.

And who did this wonderfully crafted piece of work? None other than my very good friend  Alan (Leavingtracks). Ever since Alan visited my layout in February, he had wanted to complement the layout with one of his masterpieces. Obviously, I was honored that he would want to do this. Now that it is in place, I am thrilled with it.

Hi Guys...

Well....Alex is not telling the whole story.  Alex and his wife Judy are very good friends and we dearly love both of them!!  Everyone should have friends like these two!!

Now...the rest of the story for which Alex should be taking credit.  I wanted to build something for his layout and so asked alex what he would like.....  We discussed a couple of possibilities and settled on a Granary complex.  He told me where he wanted to place it and sent pictures along with a plan of the area.  From that plan, I drew a full scale plan on which to measure and build the footprint.

A few weeks ago, Alex and Judy made plans to visit us during a trip to this part of the country on personal business.  So they came down and spent the weekend with us and then when they left, they transported the finished granary back to their home.

So all of you know...I built the main building and silos however Alex had already discussed with me that he was planning on adding details to the complex.  Everything you see in his pictures above that is NOT white is what Alex did to make the complex come alive!!  He built all of the piping and associated guy wires along with the loading facilities...so everything you see that is painted silver is his doing.

As Alex was building the add on details, he kept me up to date with pictures just as I did for him as I built the main structure.  I was so impressed that I asked that he build some custom details for my granary....and so tomorrow, I hope to see a delivery of beautiful highly detailed piping which will be added to the Twin Lakes Central Granary.

Alex....I had no idea that you were seriously going to honor me in the naming of the granary but it means more to me than you will ever know....and without your custom details, it would not be the special model that it is!!  Thank you so much my Friend!!

Alan

That was very nice of you to say, Alan, and I really appreciate it! While I did build what you mentioned, the ideas and inspiration came from your work.

Once again, this project shows one of the benefits of this Forum, the ALARCO granary. But much more importantly are the friendships that the Forum makes possible.

Another thing that Alan did not mention was the education that goes along with projects such as the granary. I had seen a few granary pictures in the Forum, and actual elevators and silos in my travels, particularly while driving in northern Indiana, where Judy’s family lives. But I did not have a clue of what a granary was or the function of the elevators, etc.

Alan motivated me to research the subject, which I did over a span of a few weeks. Then, when I thought I knew enough, we had a long conversation on the phone. It was then that Alan ‘took me to school’ and taught me the intricate details of a typical granary operation. After that, detailing the ALARCO granary was easy. Thank you, Alan!

Alex & Alan, Great Job guys.!!!

Excelent use of the space. Looking forward to seeing some GRAIN TRAIN ACTION down there in MO/ARK. With all that Rice grown down there in Ark I would think you would see a bunch of those 100 ton cylindrical hoppers on the rails! Keep up the GREAT WORK GUYS.
