I bought a NOCH static grass applicator several years ago and I just got it out for thr first time. I am trying to make some tufts however I am unable to get the grass to come out of the applicator standing up. I tested the battery and that’s ok. The red light on the applicator comes on. When I touch the mesh screen to the nail I do not see any spark. I have tried wax paper, a metal pizza pan and a nail into hardboard. Doesn’t work. How do I trouble shoot this.

I'm far from an expert in static grass. It sounds like the applicator is ok but, maybe it's in the application? Are you far enough away from the area to which you're applying the grass? also, shorter, then longer strands of grass to get a layered effect.
Can you check to make sure the ground wire from the applicator to the alligator clip does not have a break in it? I would check it with a continuity checker.
