You can save even more wire by connecting to the nearest common ground available at the switch - an outside rail. There is no particular reason to make a home run to a terminal strip or transformer.

That may be true IF all the track pins are electrically "perfect"  Each joint exhibits some small resistance which can add up if transformer is at one end and switch motor is at other end of layout.  Granted, more theoretical than possible but still something to ponder.  Besides why not do the job right for a few more bucks?  That way if you change tracks or insulate that rail you aren't wondering why the switch suddenly died.

There was another thread that ran where the owner ran hot and common bus to terminal strips next to each motor so he could disconnect from bus lines as needed.
