So I just picked up my first Lionel tinplate engine.  It is a 259E I got from the TCA museum yard sale earlier this week.  At $40 i couldn't say no!!

It does basically work as is and much to my surprise seems to have a 3 position e-unit.  the light bulb was even working for one lap!

One of the pickup rollers is missing and appears to have broken off, the marker light sections are a bit dinged up and the paint is faded as you would expect.

So.... can some one point me towards some maintenance or care instructions to give my new prize an overhaul?  Also any guidance on where to find a new pickup roller assembly and the strip it mounts to would be much appreciated as well.

I would like to get the engine to the state where it is mechanically/electrically sound and then maybe add an upgrade or 2 such as a whistle of some kind, either in the tender or sandwiched in the front of the shell since there is no smoke unit to fight with.

I will add pictures when I can.  thanks in advance, John Z.

I would take it apart and give everything a good cleaning. Any old grease and oil I would clean off then take apart the brush cover and maybe change out the brushes while your at it.  Clean the comutater " I think I botched the spelling on that one! I use to use the end of an eraser till it shined. Re oil all the moving parts not too much a drop will do it.  Then re grease the gears with a white lithium grease or Lucas red & tacky.     Hennings should have what you need for parts.

Here's a few pics of my new prize.  I think I might have to sub out the overhaul as I just don't have the time to pull it off myself right now.

As a bonus, here's the caboose I picked up to go with the engine.  Now I just need a train worth of cars to but in the middle, hmm........

note, the caboose isn't as shiny in person as it is in the picture.  Any hints on bringing back the shine without causing damage?

There is a great product called Restoresit.

I do not know if it is still sold currently. However if you can find it it does a beautiful job cleaning up the paint on these old dusty trains such that they look like brand-new. It is excellent on tinplate products.

I have used it on several items and it turns out beautiful each time.

What I forgot to add was that it was made specifically for model trains.  I purchased a bottle some years ago at York and it proved to be the best thing I had ever used to clean tinplate.

I had someone pick up several bottles for me a while back as I was concerned that it may no longer be made.

I went online and noticed that there is someone marketing a product with the same name as a wood restorer for furniture.   The fellow on the internet claims he invented it.

I just called the manufacturer of this product Restorz-it and they are not affiliated with anyone marketing a similarly named product for tinplate usage.  It's actually designed for refinishing wood.  This firm is out of Vancouver Washington.   I believe the fellow marketing the tinplate product was from out East.

What I know is the original inventor of the product passed away and his nephew picked up the product kept marketing it at York only.

If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.
