Another option is the "free" LED worklight from Harbor Freight Tools if you have one near you.  Coupons come in the Sunday paper  The HFT light also has the flip-out hook and magnet to attach to metal surfaces.  Here's a photo from another thread about LED arrays.

Then you surely also have their "free" digital meter!  And like worklight, comes with battery (albeit not alkaline).  Coupons are one-per-person-per-day so take along a friend/spouse and get both.  I see lots of people coming in just for the freebies and they are very friendly about it and don't hassle you into buying something; I think they might ask you for your zip code.

If you are going to Harbor Freight for a freebe, make certain to check your coupon(s). Most of them require a purchase, but they have been giving out some no purchase required coupons lately.

Right.  Look for "No Purchase Required".  In fact in today's paper, there's a freebie coupon for yet another useful tool for, say, working under your layout:

Oh that's no fun.  More fun getting burns from bumping hot bulb or if laid on nylon carpeting, causing deforming/melting/odors.  Oh and don't forget, extension cord reach is just short of where you want to work.

The head lamp is a great invention.  Recent trip to the Grand Canyon, saw a lot of early morning hiking  3:30 AM to dawn.  Hiking after noon is very hot. Every day we were done hiking before noon.   Most of the headlamps that were used had safe lights, lower intensity.  There is enough headlight use, that the National Park Service has some requirements about them.  Most has to do with pointing the lights down, courtesy. They can be just as annoying as high beam head lights on a car.    LED's allow for more intense light with less use of battery.
