If you go to The Time Machine try to plan for a Sunday. The Silk City Model Railroad Club

has a large HO layout that they operate every other Sunday. There is also a modest 3rail layout and

an N scale layout. Amato's also has a store in New Britain, both have O gauge inventory and

great staff. As Steve mentioned, the train show at the Big E is well worth while. Good luck,

have a safe trip. Mike

Manchester store worth the visit for the layout but inventory for o gauge is very very small, no rhyme or reason to what they have, and everything is at full list price. Like many of the local stores, tough to compete with large online outlets. If you don't mind a 90 minute drive from Hartford, Charles Ro outside of Boston is a real treat. Went there for the 1st time last month and it was well worth it. Haven't been to Amato's, so can't comment.

The Railroad Hobby Show (Jan 30-31) sponsored by the Amherst Railway Society is a must go to.  It's an all scales show and covers 4 BIG E buildings with vendors and lots of operating layouts.  It's the largest east coast show next to York.  Charles Ro and other large US train retailers will be there.  Amato's will also be there.  Amato's has a store in New Britain too.

If you're from out of town and only here on business, the BIG E show could be a once in a life time opportunity.  Many a time I combined business travel with personal business.  My experience was that companies didn't care as long as you: inform/coordinate your plans with them,  complete their business as normal and you pick up the tab for the personal part.  Just split from the pac and go.

It sound awesome.  My company is fine with allowing us to extend trips into a personal trip as long as we pay the expenses.  Unfortunately, I'll be entertaining some others that aren't really into trains.  I doubt they'll want to stay an extra day or two.   Wish I could pull it off!
