Getting ready for C H R I S T M A S decided to do a little maintenance early for a change! Opened it up and found the usual burnt sleeve around the resistor and the charred batting. When I've modded other puffers and it involved removing the sleeve, replacing the batting and opening up the air holes in the bottom. The holes in this one are really small!!

Anyone else modded this one yet??

I just do the same thing you do. I keep the batting away from the holes as it smokes better.

I measured the resistor at 14 ohms, Lionel parts list says it should be 18.

Today I will measure the original holes, try to open them up a little and we'll see what happens!!

Buttoned up and done!

Original holes in the smoke unit were 3/32", so two holes were .0134 sq in. I opened them up to 1/8", so they are now .0244 sq in.

Almost a 100% larger than they were. It certainly smokes better than it did, but still not a champion.

For the minimal time involved I'm happy with the improvement.
