Mo Pac in a day or so.  Here is the SP.  I should have added the new SP 86ft box car to this pic.  Maybe I will and repost tonite.  The new tooling is great, I really like these new engines.  The trucks are cool and the pilots are kinematic and very clever.  The detail is fantastic.  The SP light package is really really cool.  I love the tail light, but did not get a good pic of that end, but this makes a very cool looking SD40.  Cant wait for all the nice roadnames like Santa Fe and UP on this tooling!lionel sp sd40 pic2lionel sp sd40 pic 1

Hi Super O Bob, not to hijack the thread but any news on your Super O layout we used to see on Youtube videos years ago?

Hi Seacoast-

That old Super O Layout only exists on Youtube now.  It was torn down about 5 years ago in a move out to the country.  I have started a new layout, but it is only partial started and only about half way there.

Hoping to have more to show of the new Super O layout in another year.

Hi Bob,

That old Super O layout was cool stuff. If you have any new pictures or updates that would be great to see here on the forum, I am sure others would enjoy them too. Your old layout almost had me sell all my Atlas and go the custom Super O route with the huge curves.

George

like this?  The one thing with saying it never happened is to realize that over a period of time, many RR companies changed up the deco schemes. There is photographic proof that MOPAC did have the numbers large and by the wings, like this shot.  There were also variations in the buzzsaw herald and numbers in different locations and sizes.

I just received my 2 Lionel LEGACY Chessie SD40s from Nassau Hobby Center via FedEx this afternoon. For comparative purposes I took pictures of my Atlas Chessie SD40 #7505. The Lionel model is #7500.

The Atlas model still has better detail in that it has the correct number font (the "zero" should look like an "O"), the tops of the battery boxes are blue not yellow and the MU platforms are yellow not blue. The Atlas SD40 also has added detail to the trucks like a speedometer cable and sanding hoses and an "EMD" stamping on the truck side frames. The rear brake wheel and steps on the pilot are separately-applied on the Atlas SD40 whereas they are molded on the Lionel SD40.

The Lionel model has a better detailed fuel tank and the mesh radiator screens are a nice touch which the Atlas model does not have.

The radiator fan housings have a higher profile than the dynamic brake cooling fan housings on the Atlas SD40 which is correct. They are the same on the Lionel SD40. I'm not sure why the Lionel SD40 has a rectangular vent on top between the dynamic brake fan housings and the radiator housings. I think only SD40-2's had these.

I'm a bit surprised to see that only 2 of the 3 axles per truck are geared on the Lionel engine. All 3 axles are geared on the Atlas locomotive. Having said that, the Lion Drive trucks are the smoothest runners and will pull anything.

Nitpicking? Yes, but it just shows how awesome the Atlas models are. The Lionel models are very well done and I can't wait to run these 2 engines together. What Lionel might lack in detail and correctness will be made up for with LEGACY and LEGACY Railsounds.

There, Atlas can't compare.

Thanks, so do your Espee SD40's.   Did you get the Daylight engine as well?

I hope Lionel does another run of these in the next catalog. I would love to get one or two C&O or B&O SD40's. WM would be nice, too, but I have 2 Atlas WM SD40's.

No I did not do the daylight.  I got several of the others Chessie, BN, GT etc...  But they are not here yet.

Here are a few pictures I took of the 2nd SD40. The more I check out these engines the more impressed I am with the details.

7593 has a different brake cylinder arrangement than 7500 and the bell is located on the frame by the fuel tank, both of which are correct. The roof fans are the correct open top which was as advertised by Lionel. Atlas didn't replicate this. The battery boxes have the appropriate mail slot openings for these B&O units. Also, I was wrong to point out that the rear brake wheel is molded to the shell. It's not. It's separately-applied like so many other cool details.

Just MU'ed these 2 engines and like all LEGACY lashups they are as smooth as silk. The sounds are amazing, the smoke output is awesome and the lighting effects are the best out there.

Really impressive model.  I would love to see other pictures posted, especially any Clinchfield SD40's.

Thanks for the pictures catnap! I'm so excited for my BN to arrive. How do the open top fans on this one differ from the other one? It's really cool to see all the different details even between the same road names.

Thanks

Also if anyone could post a video that would be awesome!

The C&O SD40 has a round cover in the middle of the fan housings which is correct for a C&O SD40 of that series.

The B&O SD40's do not. That is correct on Lionel's part.

That rectangular vent on top is right, too. Look closely at the picture and you can see it...

Cool I see it now, didn't even realize that one was C&O and the others B&O. Thank you!!

The chessies look good.  These will be my first chessie engines.  I still think they look like Toys, just like they did in the 1970s!  Thats a really bright scheme, im sure chessie fans will slam me, but i need some grey on my yellow, being a UP fan...

Thanks for posting the pics though.  Interesting how different the atlas and lionel trucks look.

I think the Lionel truck side frames look more like the prototype. They have a thicker casting.

In terms of details and correctness, I'd give the Atlas Chessie SD40 an "A" and the Lionel an "A-". Overall I'd rate both engines an "A". The Atlas model has slightly better detail but the LEGACY sounds and lighting make up the difference in that category.

Thanks to Gunrunner John and the late Boxcar Bill all 3 of my Atlas SD40's run and sound amazing with their ERR Cruise Commander and Railsounds Commander upgrades.

Here is a picture of all 3...
