I took my MTH PS3 ALCO PA-1 ABA (20-20308-1) set to the modular display this past weekend and it would not run conventionally. So I left it on a powered track, 18 VAC, for several minutes to charge the BCR. Still would not run. At home I left it on powered track, 18 VAC, for 2 hours, still would not run conventionally. Runs great on DCS, all functions working. Powered Off, the track sounds continued for 15 to 20 seconds. Tried feature reset, still not running conventionally. Tried a factory reset, still not running conventionally. Anyone have any suggestions about what to do next?

What are the symptoms of it not running in conventional?
If it comes up with sounds but just won't move, have you tried a conventional reset? A whistle and five bells spaced at 1/2 second interval. Here's the manual excerpt for conventional feature setting.
Activating Proto-Sound 2.0 Conventional Mode Features:
Proto-Sound 2.0 features are activated by sequences of Bell and Whistle button pushes described below. Please read the full descriptions of each feature before using it. To use these buttons to activate features rather than to blow the horn/whistle or ring the bell, you should press the buttons for a shorter time (1/2 second); you may need to practice your timing to make this work smoothly.
Feature to Be Activated: | Button Code: |
Freight Yard/Passenger Station Sounds | 1 Bell, 2 Whistles |
Fire the Rear Coupler | 1 Bell, 3 Whistles |
Fire the Front Coupler | 1 Bell, 4 Whistles |
Speed Control On/Off | 1 Whistle, 2 Bells (from Neutral only) |
Lock into a Direction/Unlock | 1 Whistle, 3 Bells |
Reset to Factory Defaults | 1 Whistle, 5 Bells (from Neutral only) |
When power is applied the headlight and marker lights come on, after 5 - 10 seconds engine sounds will start and the headligh goes off marker lights stay on. Engine will respond to bell and horn buttons. No responce to direction button.
As I understand it the DCS feature reset is the same as a conventional reset, correct me if I'm wrong.
Not correct for PS-3. You need to do the Conventional Factory reset 1W and 5B. You will hear 2 toots to confirm. G
I'll try a conventional reset tonight. Thanks
I also had a PS/2 subway car that needed a conventional reset to get it operating correctly, so it's certainly worth a shot.
GRJ, something isn't right about that extract you quoted. I had to do a conventional reset on a PS3 that wasn't in neutral. It was locked into reverse. The reset unlocked it.
Hi Bob @ MP147
I have found my local brick & mortar shop an excellent source for in store help, phone help, and even by e-mail.
I have received great phone support from MTH, 410-381-2580. Plus their are a lot of guys on the Forum are also top notch.
Good Luck

What can I say, that was right from the manual.
Could the manual have an error?????????
You can't always believe everything you read.
Joe, are you pulling my leg?

Well, that reset works from neutral, I've never tried it when the engine was rolling, so I can't say.
Trust me John. It does. In fact, it was an MTH VP who told me of the conventional reset to cure a recalcitrant PS3 that had a mind of its own and refused to stay still and be brought to heel under [command] control.
I believe you, I've just never had the occasion to try a conventional reset in those circumstances.
Be thankful.
Eureka! Conventional factory reset did the trick.
Thanks gunrunnerjohn and GGG.
Now that I rethink it, the engine must have been locked in reverse.
Cheaper than sending it back to MTH!
From a few limited tries on my part the feature reset doesn't work with the engine moving in a direction. When an engine is moving, it might effect a lock out. G
Don't know about the feature reset, but since it doesn't unlock a loco locked in conventional, I haven't had a use for it.
I am talking about the Conventional reset. G
