I have three Lionel ZW transformers. How do I assure that they are correctly phased. Can I replace two wire cord with three wire cord and plugs. In that case whould I leave the green wire unconnected?

I phased my two wire cord transformers and then glued a 3 wire adapter from the hardware store on the transformer plugs so I could not later plug one in out of phase.

Do not use a 3 prong/grounded plug on equipment not originally fashioned with such and do not ground the chassis of the transformer if not originally fashioned. This is a safety issue (I know it seems counter intuitive, but it voids the UL and any similar listings, and have heard stories where this potentially voids/denies any homeowners or other insurance claims)
You can use a two prong polarized plug if you wish, but you can start off with non-invasive measures such as marking the orientation of the plugs, using power strip, or similar for maintaining phase once determined.

There is no "Stupidity" exclusion on a homeowner's policy.
