Unbeknownst to me, has the definition of "Hi-Rail" changed in the last 20 years? In a galaxy far far away 20 years or so ago, I became aware of a term coined "Hi-Rail" through CTT magazine.  From the layouts CTT was featuring I was enlightened to just how "detailed" a layout could be.  When I renewed my efforts to actually build a "Finished" layout I noticed that at least a few people posting videos on YouTube were referring to their layouts as "Hi-Rail".  Truly the only thing about them being Hi-Rail was the fact that they were O scale tubular track of which is way out of true scale.  It's as if they think the term refers to the fact that the tubular track is quite higher than the more realistic sizing of the expensive alternatives. For the few reasons I chose to go with Lionel O 31 Scale, I knew my layout could never actually be a Hi-Rail layout. The track is nearly chest high to the little dudes and dudettes  living in Chesterville.  That hasn't stopped me from Trying to be more realistic on some scenes, and or aspects.  Don't get me wrong, I love everyone's attempts and efforts they've undertaken to accomplish their tiny little worlds.  My point being, coming from the construction world, nomenclature, and terminology are important.  It's probably inappropriate for posing this question and I'm most certainly not trying to offend or hurt anyone's feelings.

The term ‘Hi-rail’ comes from Louis Hertz, I believe from sometime in the 30’s.  I do agree with you that a lot of people are rather loose with the term.  I’ve see people with 100% original Flyer (definitely tinplate) layouts purchase a newer vintage engine or car from the likes of SHS or MTH and all of a sudden their layouts are Hi-rail.  In my mind, not a chance, however don’t try to convince them.

Well, the manufacturer's apparently are referring to rail type.  MTH has engines that you can order with scale wheels or Hi-Rail wheels.  The scale wheels have small flanges similar but a bit taller than 2-rail wheels.  The Hi-Rail wheels are the pizza cutters we all know and love.

Thanks John, as usual you cleared it up for me. I've been out in the cold so long so I figured the terminology had changed just as much as the hobby itself.
