During the Greenberg Show last weekend in Edison, NJ where the 4-H club I'm in took part, I had A LOT of people taking photos, watching, pointing, or commenting on my two recent and gorgeous Lionel Legacy steamers: the Southern Crescent Limited PS-4 and Southern Pacific GS-4 Daylight.

So, I must ask those who partake in train shows, displays, or various events where you run your trains, which train of your's is "The Star"? Or which is the one that grabs everyone's attention?

Mikado 4501 - those two locos certainly will attract attention with their colors and paint schemes.

To answer your question what is my "star"? Well, I don't go to that many shows or display meets but when I do and I want to run a loco to attract attention or wow people, I choose the MTH European series French 241.A.  First, it has detail and paint rivaling the best brass I have seen, and just enough shiny brass and other bits and colored gleaming trim to look really fancy.

And then there is its rather deep version of the shrill, European type steam loco whistle - just the best sound I have ever heard any model loco make. That whistle attracts attention like nothing else.  I've doubled up two shots of it below - I only have the one.

The Lionel Standard Gauge Hiawatha. Every December our toy train museum has extra open house days, and the Hiawatha gets the most attention. It's big, it's noisy, it smokes, and I stop it from time to time and open the cars so the kids can see in. I've added passengers, which adds to the appeal. There's nothing like it.

This family of tourists from China was surprised when I welcomed them in Chinese! (The woman in the foreground did speak some English, which was just as well because my Chinese is very, very rusty.)
