I am presently constructing my first layout. it seems that my local home depot does not carry Homosote. they have a product they call sound board or sound stop board.
does this do the same job as homosote?
and do I install it the same? i.e. liquid nails and drywall screws.

A quick guess. It might be called Quite Brace.
A black nasty looking stuff.
If it is Search this site (advanced search) and you will find a lot of information on it and how to use it.
I had the same problem in the South. Home stores carried Quite Brace. A lot cheaper and it works....IMO

Homasote's real name is 440 Soundbarrier.

It is a heavy gray-colored, compressed paper fiber product. It is available at many locations in Washington. Just follow the link "Where to Buy". It holds screws well because of its density.

Just as Larry stated, Quiet Brace works quite well, and is 25% to 33% less expensive
than Homasote (440 Soundbarrier). I believe it also cuts easier than Homasote, is a
little messy, but name one such product that isn't when cut.

It's not black, it's a light tan or gray color. I have it on my layout, glued to the top of the plywood top. It does cut down on sound, but how much compared to Homosote, I can't tell you as HD doesn't carry it here either.

If they have it, it's called Soundboard 440 and it is in the insulation board section. That's a Homosote product.
Multiple dots of liquid nails should hold it to the sub-board.
