I know, after reading this post you all will be wondering how I even know how to run these trains! But, here goes....
On a Z4000 what is Hot and what is Common? Please refer to them as either Black or Red posts.
On a ZW what is Hot and what is Common? Please refer to them as either Common or ABCD posts.
I will mark these indelibly on the two transformers when I get the right answers from you Forumites.

Traditionally Red is hot, Black common. Red is center rail, black outside rails.
For ZW, hots are ABCD, common is U. All Us are tied together.
Truth is, Paul, it really doesn't matter, as long as all your transformers are matched or in sync. This is AC power which alternates between plus or minus, 60 times a second.

If you notice that the horn/whistle blows when you press the bell button, and the bell works when you hit the horn/whistle button, you've got it hooked up backwards.

It matters...and I hate it when books are not aligned on the desk parallel to the desk's edges. And I always set the volume on the TV to an even number...and so forth.
Of course, the posts that are common, are common...that does kind of matter.
