Still new to O Scale, I just purchased the MTH Railking O Scale Vertical Signal, MTH # 30-11036. After opening the box and reading the directions I realized that it requires either an Infrared Track Activation Device (MTH #40-1028) or its mechanical equivalent. The ITAD is designed for Realtrax or Scaletracks.
I'm using Atlas O 21st Century track.

The easy way would be to use something like the Lionel 153-IR to trigger it, it'll set along side any type of track.
I used an insulated outside rail with a relay.
That would work as well, I was going for ease of use. 
This afternoon I picked up two of the Lionel 153IR's as Gun Runner suggested. Installed two signal lights (a vertical three light and the 7 light semaphore) to the first ITAD. Works like a charm. Will install the second ITAD with the remaining vertical three light tomorrow.
Thanks for the great suggestion. The 153IR looks right at home as a trackside feature. Provided power to it off the adjacent rails.
The 153-IR is a neat little device, and it works well. I've never had the problem, but I have heard that occasionally you'll have to reorient it for bright light, especially if you get sunlight.
Dont those things cost about $40 each? Doing it with a relays is maybe $8.
