i have a cw40 making fan noise. i took the transformer apart and i see the fan. if i push on the metal piece, the fan will quiet. i see a couple of small nuts that i may be able to tighten. other than tightening the nuts and maybe giving it a shot of silicone/wd40 is there anything else i can easily do? i'm not going to bother trying to replace the motor. my main concern was the silicone/wd40...is it a fire hazard?? jeff

A drop of oil on the fan motor shaft may help if it is actually squealing, some quiet down the longer they are plugged in. Most of the noise from mine is the air movement sound.
Use a couple of drop of oil. DON'T use WD-40 as a lubricant!
i tried the "liquid wrench". it still rattles. do i now have a fire hazard???
FWIW, its been my experience you can't fix these fans. Once the bearings wear, there is a space for the shaft to rattle around in, Adding oil just fills the space and quiets the noise until the oil/lubricant runs out and shaft resumes ratting again. If really annoying, may just have to replace the cheapy fan with a good one. Jameco Electronics ia really good resource for these fans, they give dimensions, voltages, amperage, air movement etc. Costs more but may be solution, but the fan may cost more than transformer. Or just throw out transformer and buy new and move up in wattage.
Aerosol lubes like wd40, liquid wrench, etc. are way to thin.
I'd recommend labelle 102 or in a pinch, some 3in1 oil from the local hardware store.
