I have been looking for a set of these handsome B&O's by Lionel for quite awhile now. Have had early MTH B&O E6's that seemed to me to be too dark overall. Also some nice Williams scale FA's that were 'better' but I find the Lionel B&O diesels (I have the RF-16's too) have a richer blue as well as a lighter shade of gray.

Only two other Forum members had them that I've been aware of so I'm taking a 'survey' - How many of you have these?  Which cars do you run with yours? Photos would be appreciated...

Sam: I used to have an ABA set until a few years ago. A Forum member had a "Want" ad here on the Forum and we made a deal for him to purchase my set. I believe he's retired and lives in Maine if I recall correctly. I used them to haul freight exclusively.

I enjoyed this set and the paint decorations-Lionel did a good job on these.IMG_3942IMG_3944IMG_3945

I Have three scale Lionel F3 A units and three B units. Not all pictured. Also have the later run Lionel scale F7s, three A units and four B units some are powered and some are "break down" units with 5.0 engine sounds. Ran them with the 1st. run GGD SF Super Chief set. I haven't run these in years, should sell them.

Hey Sam,

As you know I have this ABA set but with the powered B-unit.  As I recall purchased these from local toy train shop the summer of 2005 not long after they became available.  This dealer (2.2-miles from house) was having a fantastic sale (saw it as a cash flow sale).  Stuff they had in stock over a year or so 50/60% off.  These new arrivals were 40% off.  Grew up with the B&O and rode the road over 1200-miles.  These were the best B&O cab units lionel ever made.

Since Lionel built these as freight units (pilot and road numbers)  picked up two sets of MTH 2-bay coal hoppers.  Also ordered Lionel's prototypically correct round top bay-window cab.

A couple of years ago sold off the hoppers since have several coal drags.  Can run them for a mixed freight.

But since the B&O did originally pull the Colombian with F3's passenger units will occasionally [but mostly with my MTH E6's (with power converted B-unit)]

pull my set of MTH respectively correct Columbian Pass Sets.
