I just ordered more things from Scenic Express. I took the time to tell them how I really appreciate their sponsorship. Its important to let these kind folks know they are helping us all in this hobby. Don

I think placing an order with them, whether they're a forum sponsor or not, is plenty thanks for the most part.
I do thank individuals whenever I make a deal with them.
I will tell someone like Dave at LRB Enterprises how grateful I am that he has started offering to make O scale decals, but I doubt I'll email him a thank you note ever time I place an order (he's probably too busy to be bothered with a bunch of emails that only say THANK YOU anyway).
Oh how I wish we had a sub-forum for "water-cooler" topics
We are never, never too busy to receive a thank you from one of our clients. A business (what ever it is) will always hear from an unhappy client in no uncertain terms but rarely hear few if any thanks from anyone.
I, for one, appreciate each and every "THANK YOU" we receive.
Dave, LBR
Always.
Every time I purchase from one of the forum's sponsors, Patrick's Trains at his store under the bridge, we talk about forum postings and how much we enjoy Gunner John's and Boxcar Bills comments about all things electronic. I would assume Pat is very happy that his sponsorship money is reaching a customer who lives over two hours away and drives 100 plus miles to his store. Although I appreciate Pat being a sponsor of the forum, I appreciate his great store even more.
Forum sponsors aside, for me it applies to all when someone extends a good deal or good service a simple thank you goes a long way in establishing a relationship.
Likewise we as buyers of goods and services should be thanked for choosing that particular merchant. We do have choices and I look for the little personal touch when someone THANKS ME for my business as a barometer for me returning as a repeat customer.
I go out of my way to do this. It is the best way to inform them we appreciate their sponsorship.
Not too long ago, I ordered 4 portals from Scenic Express. One was broken in the packaging (packed really well). I called them, a replacement was sent that I received the next day. I called them to thank them for their excellent service and at the same time for being a Forum sponsor.
Very good reminder for all, Don.
I always let them know where I found them.
" I saw your post on OGR forum, I'd like to place an order "
It helps to let them know that being a sponsor here is working...
Absolutely.

Thank You !!! I'm glad somebody said it !!!
I always thank them. It *is* important for them to know where their advertising dollars generate sales. If no one from OGR forums thanked them, but everyone from another source thanked them, how long do you think they'd maintain a presence here?
Every time, I've had vendors thank me for thanking them. As Dave from the decal shop said, with all the crap retail puts up with, it is very appreciated when someone does thank them.
And, Bob T, and others who want a water cooler forum. I have mixed emotions on that. We get enough bruised egos around here just because someone misplaced some punctuation. (Let's eat Grandma! vs Let's eat, Grandma!) In my other life (aviation), I belong to some organizations who *do* have "anything goes" forums. They are well caveated that if you go there, expect to be hurt or encounter folks of different political persuasions. Yet, we've still lost folks because of hurt feelings or aneurisms, etc.
I always do. Also mention that is how I found them.
Scale Rail,
You bet every time!

That would sure be a good place to put all the stuff about boats, buses, cars, cats, China, dogs, politics, planes and whatever else you can think which has nothing to do with trains.
I just ordered 2 of the Moe's garage. I have a Menards 3 towns east of me. I just figured it is so easy to just order it and wait a few days for the delivery man to drop it off. So now I wait.

I guess I'm in the minority. I thought shelling out $500 for a diesel is thanks enough to them.

i aways thought the same. with very few exceptions, businesses/clubs/ pay to access all the free advertising they can post here. i salute the ones that keep a low profile and show a true support of the hobby. ross custom switches come to mind here.-jim
Now that you mentioned this I never have thanked any of them in the ordering process, though I always go to the sponsors list first and I have thanked them many a time on these pages.
I will make a note to do so in the future.
Oh yea, I just got an order in from OGR about two weeks ago with one of every building flat they carry.
Thanks for supporting the forum guys! Better late then never.

I think that the thread's TITLE said enough, did you not know what to expect when you opened the thread? I WISH that people who are NOT INTERESTED in a topic would just pass right on by without a comment.
Now back to your regularly scheduled topic:
Yes, when I buy from forum sponsors I Thank them for their sponsorship, and what a contribution this forum is to the Hobby.

In terms of pure social graces, I do thank people from whom I purchase, whether it be in this hobby or not. But as the purchaser, the thank you should be coming from the seller - the person who just profited from my giving him/her my business.
I always try to make it a point to mention that I appreciate their support of the OGR and the forum.
I make sure they know I bought from them because they are a sponsor.

The sponsors on this forum have small ads( the large ones are what, less than 1"x3") at the top of the page, but their advertising supports this forum. Other forums that I have been on have pop ups that you have to click on to delete, VERY ANNOYING, On youtube and some other sites you have to watch video ads before you can view the content that you are there to see.
I personally prefer the small unobtrusive ads of the forum sponsors at the top of the page. Also those ads are links to businesses that I may actually be interested in their products, whereas, I have NEVER had an ad on youtube inspire me to purchase anything.
Thanking them, lets them KNOW which of their advertising dollars are effective, and in doing so helps support this forum, which I find to be informative, and entertaining.

Martin H, Thank You for incompletely quoting my post, I was replying specifically to what Bob Delbridge and Bob Taylor posted, and did NOT in any way or form comment on anything you posted, so maybe should be the one to WHOA, there pardner.

The business should thank the customer. That said, if I am talking to a person (vs an online order), I am sure to tell them I saw them on this forum so they know their advertising money is well spent.
While I generally agree with the sentiment of the folks who believe that businesses should thank their customers. I do make it a point to either thank the people working at those businesses for helping me, or at least tell them to have a nice day.
There are a lot of people who treat those folks rudely.
I might mention that I choose their business based on where they advertised, but I would not thank them for it.
IMO. If someone helps you with something. A service perhaps or helps you in obtaining an engine or a piece of rolling stock or anything for that matter. I thank them. And 9 times out of 10 I get a welcome reply and a thank you in return. It's just a matter of common courtesy. That's all.

It has never crossed m mind to thank someone for "sponsoring"this forum. They are advertisers, remember Alan the "Ad Man"? He is not Alan the " altruistic Sponsor Man".
That said I am confident some advertisers indeed have good intentions in helping promote the hobby in general, but selling their product is why they advertise.
For regular purchases, I thank them by spending more money with them. Now if I feel they went above and beyond the normal to help me with something, then I'll post something. But typically I let my money do the talking.
There is confusion between thank you and praise for a good product or service. I expect a thank you for giving a vendor business. If the product or service meets or exceeds my expectations, then I give praise.

I 100% agree with this. I had deals that required extra attention form a couple forum sponsors. In one of those cases, it required quite a bit of extra work on his side. I definitely made sure I thanked them.
Forum sponsor list. Pasted at the top of each forum index. Click on the underlined to access the list.
I have to say many do! Thank you all!

I always say "appreciate it" or "thank you" when conducting my business just because it is the right thing to do. Of course, the seller should always be professional and say thank you. If not, I'll go elsewhere.
I do not thank a forum sponsor for supporting the forum as I just spent my money there. I also do not go out of my way to support a forum sponsor and quite frankly, I really could care less if they are/aren't. While I get the point, I really don't care for the "protection" being a sponsor gets you here. You can't post a bad experience, say anything remotely critical, etc without it getting deleted VERY quickly.
