I set up a # Lion Chief controllers along the fence for the kids to run the trains at model train shows. The little ones love this with some Thomas Themed trains etc. But when they get all the bells going it drives you nuts and cannot tell which train engine has a bell or whistle going. Instead I blocked off the sound buttons on the Lion Chief controllers and have some small diecast toy trains with sounds instead. I am trying to figure out how I could mount these and amplify the sounds, and activate them so the kids can push a button on the control board and hear the engine sounds. The little toy engines are not loud enough to hear at a noisy train show. How could I modify these for larger speakers or speaker boxes on the control boards so they could hear the sounds? I do not want a bunch of wires or power going to the fence, trying for a simple battery sound booster option? Any ideas??

For less than $1 (free shipping) you can get a 5V DC stereo 3 Watt amplifier module (eBay 262130705142) with volume control.  It can drive 4 ohm or 8 ohm speakers.  It's stereo, so in your case you could amplify two different trains with one module...so you're down to 50 cents per amplifier!

3 Watts is plenty of audio power for what you're describing.  And these modules use so-called Class-D amplifiers which are electrically efficient considering you're talking battery power.
