Well, the arcing of light actually

I was running a train tonight and saw what I thought was lights on my newly painted GP9 flickering.

I watched again as the train passed, only to see a huge blue ball shoot from underneath a tank car that was directly behind the engine.  I immediately put the train in emergency stop and pulled the tank car for service.

What I found were pit marks on one of the wheels and marks on the track where the incident occurred repeatedly.

The truck the wheel was in seemed tighter than the other so I pulled the frame and removed the truck, but couldn't see anything that might have been a problem.  When I put the car back together I made sure the truck was not screwed down as much as before.

I also found a slight misalignment in the track, just before the pitting.  It is located at the end of my drop-down section where I access the room.  I figure I must have bumped into it at some point and didn't notice it until now.  None of the other cars were doing it though, so it must have been the combination of the 2 problems.

Problem solved, but not before it pitted the wheel/track and actually shutdown the layout twice.

I'm going to make sure I inspect the track for alignment issues next time I clean it, don't want another light show

Bob,

I take it, that your locomotive's electronic components, lights and the other freight car lights are operable?

Because, a few years ago, when I was running my Lionel TMCC U30B locomotive, which needs 18 volts of juice, a screw from one of the power trucks came loose, caused a short and messed up the radio receiver in the loco.

This, FANCY PROCEDURE caused my loco. to LAUNCH forward at a high rate of speed, luckily I caught the loco. in mid air!

Then, after sending it to Lionel for a check-up, part(s) replacement(s) and/or repair(s), the Lionel Technician who worked on my loco. told me that someone tried to work on the loco. and messed up the repair and also caused the screw to be loose.

I won't mention where I bought my loco. from, BUT it was supposed to be 'BRANDEEE NEW,' 'OLD STOCK!!!!!'

Also, I found out that a Lionel warranty was only good for SIX months after purchase, within the first year the item was issued to the market!!!

 I must be missing something?

Why did the tank car cause a spark? Does it have all metal KD couplers and boxes and is the tank car metal as well??

I got shocked from one of my metal hoppers once. I had to swap out the coupler boxes. Only one side of the wheels were insulated and that created a bad scenario when it was coupled to another that was reversed, with the wheels on each rail carrying current. I still grab those cars gingerly afraid of getting zapped!

The engine is fine, glad nothing happened in that department!

Joe, the underframe of the tank car is metal and so is the coupler box and Kadee coupler I managed/mangled to get in there.  When I turned it over I saw WEAVER stamped on the box lid (thought I had gotten rid of all those) so the ALL metal combo give me a slap this time around.

I've had this car for a while, but never had (or noticed) this happening before.  I've got some plastic Kadee couplers so I might have to place the car on the RIP track for an upgrade.

Ralph...good catch   I would imagine that was like catching a bowling ball in mid-air
