Ice House landing & stairway

The platform and staircase is a big improvement and fits nicely in a small footprint.

I would paint everything the same  color of the main support beams.

Beautiful work and a nice addition to a great kit! I've had to settle for spiffing up a Lionel #352 Ice House with lights and a couple of extra characters. My kids love action - the man with the paddle launching his ice blocks into the ice car bunker at warp speed...

I also have this kit, and was wondering on the other end of platform the conveyor starts on the ground level, what is that for? Does the ice house suppose to go there? Trucks? I always see the ice house behind platform.

clem k, that is a very good question, I just assumed that the platform was used for "incoming" ice from trucks that was then sent up the conveyor then into the ice house for cold storage until needed in the railroad cars? Maybe someone else here knows how these used to operate?

That came out really nice. Stairways always add a nice detail over ladders.

 

You can also buy stairs ,ladders and handrails from Plastruct in styrene allowing you to work with similar materials for ease of gluing. I think the styrene materials are also a little cheaper.

  Thanks for the info on the stairs, ladders and handrails being available in styrene I did not know that!! Can I ask where do you buy your styrene from? I usually get mine at a hobby shop in the area, but they usually only have a pack or two of what I am looking for and can not "stock up" this way. I was on Evergreen's web site today but it did not appear that I could order from them direct.

Jeff,

Go to Evergreen or Plastruct direct. They both have a great selection of it. I like Evergreens patterned sheets the best when I am constructing buildings or houses. You can buy the sheets as big as 12" x 24" from Evergreen. Plastruct actually sells 36" x 12" sheets in plain stryrene and ABS. This allows complete building walls to be constructed in one piece for most projects. Call Evergreen and Plastruct and I think they will give you a free catalog with your first order.

Ice houses that did not produce their own ice had it shipped in, by truck and even by rail. Cars were designated "Ice Sevice", and spotted at the platorm, and unload right to the conveyor.

Thanks Laidoffsick~ the conveyor feeds the ice house also, wonder what they have in the icehouse to lift and stack ice blocks? I know ice use to be big business.
